I think Kier Starmer made the right decision. It's come out that a Labour MP has made a bet on himself to lose. That is going to effect constituents. Someone might have wanted to vote for that MP and now it feels like what is the point of voting for them if they don't even think they're going to win. Where is your ambition. And now, I feel like we've opened pandoras box with regards to betting. I think the rules should be changed on betting. I don't think you should be able to bet on yourself or other candidates in your constituency.

I can't believe you - and other commentators - believe Starmer would be angry about this plank in Norfolk betting against himself (not illegal in the slightest, but, optically, VERY poor). Whilst I’m not a Reform supporter at all, their party is the only one in my constituency with a candidate proclaiming, “no to war in Ukraine” - the rest are supporting the further slaughter of Ukrainians and Russians ( already 300-400 thousand dead). I will be holding my nose and giving them my vote.

It is deeply disappointing (but not surprising) to hear the three of them dismiss the gambling issue to a "It's just some fun and games!" argument. THAT is the problem. Politicians treat their profession with less seriousness than athletes and then the media make excuses for why they should be treated differently than the general public.

With regards to the Labour guy, if he was betting on him winning, that'd be different because even without the bet, he should be trying his hardest to win. But betting on a loss is a clear cnflict of interest as you could "throw the match".

There are laws under fraud, insider trading and conflict of interest - which apply especially to the government and government workers.

Oh, for heavens sake. It is not gambling when an individual know the result at the time of placing the wager. It is fraud.
